Teacher Gift Idea ~ Close Encounters of the Third-Grade Kind

My youngest is in 3rd grade this year, so when I was asked to review Close Encounters of the Third-Grade Kind: Thoughts on Teacherhood, I was pretty excited.  Plus I had already heard what a great book it was.

Once again, author and veteran California school teacher Done (32 Third Graders and One Class Bunny: Life Lessons from Teaching) shares his unique, joyful view of childhood with gentle humor and penetrating insight. Going through the school year month by month, Done offers humorous vignettes, student profiles and phenomena unique to the third grade, peppered with memories of Done's own childhood, which only get better as the book goes on. Done's style is straightforward and fast-paced, expertly recreating his adventures as the sole adult in a room of eight-year-olds. Culled from decades of experience, Done's text illuminates the enormous commitment and generous humor needed to get through 25 years of teaching ("After learning their names, I gave them the Keep Your Zippers Up Speech in my best Judge Wapner voice"). Alongside dry wit, Done also delivers heartbreak and wisdom relevant to anyone with memories of a childhood classroom.

This book was such a wonderful read.  It would make such a fun book to give to your childs teacher.  A bit of a different present, that any teacher is sure to enjoy!

If you aren't in a rush for Christmas, Pick up a copy of Close Encounters of the Third-Grade Kind: Thoughts on Teacherhood at my affiliate Amazon.

Do you have a Ballet Dancer to shop for this Christmas?

Do you have any dancers on your shopping list this year?  Is there a special little girl that loves ballet?  If so, I have a couple reviews you will be interested in.

First, Prima Princessa has recently released their second dvd ~ Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker.  Ever since I first learned about Prima Princessa Swan Lake, I have been waiting for them to release The Nutcracker.  This is my girls favorite ballet.  My oldest even got to dance in it 2 years in a row when she was younger.  It holds a special place in our hearts.

This family Christmas movie is the perfect Holiday Gift for girls ages 3 to 7. Join Prima Princessa, the adorable cartoon fairy ballerina princess, as she takes you on an amazing Christmas adventure filled with snow fairies, toy soldiers, sugarplums and sweets galore!  Get on your pretty tutu and get ready to dance with the San Francisco Ballet as they perform excerpts from their world famous ballet “Nutcracker.” Between acts your kids will get up off the couch and dance along as they learn real ballet steps demonstrated by students from the School of American Ballet, the official academy of the New York City Ballet.
The Prima Princessa Presents series is designed by two stay at home mom-entrepreneurs on a mission to bring the beauty and magic of ballet into the lives of children everywhere.
You can purchase Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker on Amazon with a retail of $12.99 and is usually cheaper!  If you don't have the Swan Lake dvd, you can pick that up as well.
Why not pick up one or both of the dvds, gift box it with a tutu for dress-up or dance class.  This would be a great gift for girls age 3 - 6ish.  My 8 & 12 year old would have loved these as a gift.  My 8 year old actually loves both of these dvds and does watch them.  They are definitely geared towards 3 - 7 though.

This next item I was so excited to learn about.  505 Games has just released the very first ever Ballet Video game for the Wii!  How cool is that?  You see all the sports, cheerleading, even dancing ~ you never see ballet though.  Ballet is the foundation of dance.  It is such a great activity for kids to take part in.  Not only will it teach grace, but balance and core strength.
My Ballet Studio, players can pirouette, pliƩ and perform en pointe on the Nintendo Wii Balance Board as they embark on a journey to become the best ballerina!
My Ballet Studio for Nintendo Wii allows players to practice authentic ballet moves. Young ballerinas are encouraged to study hard at ballet school and learn real techniques in movement and position lessons and performance modes. My Ballet Studio comes complete with multiple mini-games where players can earn money to buy new clothes and accessories from tutu to tiara to complete their performances with the perfect look. Gamers will be able to track their progress and measure how close they are to perfecting their dream routines.
"As a fun video game that also encourages an active lifestyle, My Ballet Studio is a terrific game for kids this holiday season," said Adam Kline, president of 505 Games (U.S.).  "Aspiring ballerinas can learn new moves and practice steps with their friends in My Ballet Studio."
My Ballet Studio for Nintendo DS includes interactivity features for aspiring ballerinas on the go. Players can challenge their friends in ballet competitions via the wireless gameplay mode and share unlocked costumes that will provide brand new looks to their characters.
I was excited to see that this game is compatible with the balance board from Wii Fit Plus as well.  I talked hubby into getting me one for Christmas.  He wasn't thrilled since he thinks it will sit around like all my other exercise stuff, lol.  I was happy to show him that when I got my game in the mail!
This game is a great way to see if your little one will enjoy ballet before shelling out the big bucks for a class.  It is also great for girls already in class.  Most girls love to practice and this is a fun way for them to do that.
My Ballet Studio is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB and is available now on both Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS for $29.99. Both versions can be purchased online at Amazon, along with many other video game retailers.

Green Works New Laundry & Stain Fighter!

I really like the new Green Works line by Clorox.  I use several of the products in my home currently and am exicited that they are expanding the line to include new products.
They now not only cover the bathroom and kitchen, but our laundry rooms as well. With its efforts, Green Works continually makes it simple for Moms to incorporate green living into their households. The Green Works Natural Laundry Detergent and Stain Remover, launched this past summer, upholds the same high-performance standard as other cleaners from the Green Works line. As we take care that chemicals don't find their way into our kids' hands, food, and toys, we don't want harsh chemicals on their clothes either.
Green works laundry are a  natural plant-based detergent and stain remover. This resulted in a patent-pending formula, which the Environmental Protection Agency's Design for Environment program recognized as safer for families.
I was sent one laundry detergent and one stain fighter to sample out.  I first want to say that I really liked the scent.  My husband even commented on liking it.  I have been using it for a couple weeks now and really like it.  I haven't noticed any difference in my laundry at all.  Everything is coming out clean with a nice scent.  I'm very happy with Clorox Green Works for laundry!
You can visit www.greenworkscleaners.com for more information.
I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Clorox Green Works and received a bottle of Green Works Natural Detergent and Stain Remover to facilitate my review and a $20 thank-you gift certificate.

Squeeballs Review & Giveaway ~ CLOSED

I  have a fun review and giveaway for you today.  It is brought to you from Performance Designed Products (PDP).  PDP sells all those great accessories for all of the various gaming platforms.  With over a decade's experience in the gaming industry, it doesn't come as a surprise to me that PDP is the first to  introduce the world's first cross-platform motion game.

Here is more information on the game:

Squeeballs are 12 toys that are manufactured on a secret island somewhere in the Pacific. Before they can be sold to children around the world, the Squeeballs must be fully put to the test...to the point of destruction! You can blow up, cook, slice, bat, bowl, shoot and bounce the Squeeballs. The game features a unique collection of 11 party games, each taking place in a different environment from lava-filled canyons, bowling alleys and kitchens to science labs and snow-capped mountains. As the game progresses and more challenges are met - each one more difficult than the last - the game showcases more than 150 unique challenges.

Squeeballs Party is available for the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS/DS Lite/DSi, Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. The Wii version features 11 party games; other versions vary in content. "Squeeballs Party" is rated E10+ (Everyone 10 and older) with the descriptors "Cartoon Violence" by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Find more information at www.Squeeballs.com.

I was sent the Wii version of this game to review, along with 2 adorable Squeeball characters.  Let me tell you this game is fun.  It does have a bit of violence to it though.  When you are putting the squeeballs to the test, you are really putting them to the test.  Again, it can get a bit violent.  The rating of E10+ is a very fair rating, so if you  have younger kids, you might want to test this out yourself first.

Squeeballs Party used to retail for $29.99, but they recently lowered the retail down to $19.99!

Onto the Giveaway ~ I have one copy to giveaway to you.  Visit the Squeeballs site, then leave a comment telling me if you'd like to win; a Nintendo Wii Squeeballs game or the Nintendo DS Squeeballs game.

PulseYoga DVD Giveaway ~ Closed

I have a great giveaway for the upcoming new year.   How many of us make a resolution to lose some weight for the new year?  Even if you don't do resolutions, most woman want to lose some weight after the holidays.   Thanks to KMR Communications, I have one Pulse Yoga DVD to giveaway.

Pulse Yoga is a result of Argie Tang's personal quest to find yoga routines that accomplish much more than other yoga styles.

A few years ago I was diagnosed with osteopenia. This is almost osteoporosis, but not quite. I was shocked as I have been practicing yoga for so many years and consider myself to be in very good physical condition. The doctor told me that I needed to do some sort of weight training program. I have never really liked working out in a gym, always preferring yoga. I also did not want to give up precious time allotted to my yoga practice, so I decided to incorporate free weights into my yoga routines.

Pulse Yoga I Basic
Pulse Yoga I Basic
A basic yoga routine that introduces the Pulse concept of micro movements within a posture. Key areas such as abdominal, lower back and gluteous muscles are targeted. Alternating right/left pulse movements with free weights define and sculpt the upper body.
  • Apply the use of free weights in novel ways to basic yoga postures
  • Strengthen and tone key areas such as the abdominals, lower back upper arms and gluteus
  • Teach core awareness
  • Stretch chronically tight areas such as the hamstrings and hip flexors
Pulse Yoga I Basic DVD

Only $14.99

To enter this giveaway ~ Tell me, do you make resolutions?  Why or why not and does that include weight loss?
